What is Nickel?
Earth consists of different kinds of elements. Oxygen, Hydrogen, Calcium, Potassium, Carbon; these are some of the most common elements present on earth. Another element that should not be overlooked and that is used quite frequently in our daily lives is Nickel. It is a silvery-white metal with a strong and shiny characteristic. It is used in different applications, from the batteries that give power to our electronic devices to the stainless steel that is used to make things more durable and rust-resistant.
Characteristics
Nickel is very important in many industries because of its robust characteristics and resistance to corrosion. Because of these characteristics, Nickel is excellent for strengthening metal alloys. It is also malleable and ductile, so it is easily shaped into rods, wires, sheets, and tubes. For example, bicycle frames usually use alloys because of its lightweight and durability from corrosion.
Properties
The Periodic Table or Table of Elements has 118 elements. Nickel has an atomic number of 28. The atomic symbol is Ni. It falls under the elemental category of transition metals. This group can be found in the middle section of the table of elements. According to the IUPAC, the transition metals are known for the elements whose atoms are partially filled with a d sub-shell. The density is about 8.908 g/cm3. The melting point is at 2651 degrees Fahrenheit or 1455 degrees Celsius. Its boiling point is about 5275 degrees Fahrenheit which is equivalent to 2913 degrees Celsius.
Production
Sulfides pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and millerite are kinds of nickel that can be used and extracted for commercial use. These contain approximately 1% Nickel content. Nickel ores are mined in 23 countries, while they are smelted in 25 countries. Eramen Minerals is one of the mining companies in the Philippines that mine Nickel. They have a safe and sustainable procedure for mining and extracting Nickel. They also take care of their surrounding communities in Sta. Cruz, Zambales, promoting sustainability and ecosystem preservation.
