Eramen Minerals Inc. – Promoting Ecosystem Preservation
Eramen Minerals believes in responsible and sustainable mining so much, that they are among a few entities who actually practice it.
Before Eramen Minerals run a mining site, they are carefully planning for ecosystem preservation. This plan is implemented simultaneously while doing the mining program. They did this at their mining site in Sta. Cruz Zambales.
Eramen Minerals, as a company that values the environment, knows that the ecosystem is a complex web of interactions between the habitat and its inhabitants. The ecosystem’s preservation that Eramen Minerals has planned consists of the following: tree planting, waste management, and animal protection. Eramen Minerals also did different kinds of activities that might help to re-develop again the ecosystem. Here are some things they have been doing. Read on —
Tree Planting
One of the essentials of the ecosystem is trees. Usually planted in the forest, a single tree can be home to hundreds of species of insects, fungi, moss, mammals, and plants.
Depending on the kind of food and shelter they need, different forest animals require different types of habitats. Trees help us breathe clean air, filter water, and provide almost 80% of the world’s habitat and of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity.
Eramen Minerals put this as their priority for ecosystem preservation. This year, they created a project called “Gulayan sa Minahan.” It is a continuous study being conducted to determine the kinds of vegetables and crops that could be grown on-site. The success of the project hinges on the ability, not just to grow the crops, but to maintain a sustainable way to grow them, and the initial results are promising.
Waste Management
Waste management are composed of activities or actions required to manage waste from the starting point up to its final form of waste. It disposes of products and substances that have been used in a safe and efficient manner.
Eramen Minerals have proper waste management integrated into their programs. They treat the chemicals they use in the mining area. Then a chemical engineer treats the chemicals to make them eco-friendly waste. They also have proper garbage disposal for each employee because they believe that the proper disposal of garbage can help re-develop again the ecosystem. This is one way on how they can promote ecosystem preservation.
Clean-up Drive
A clean-up drive is a program wherein each barangay will participate in cleaning their environment. This is done weekly and at the end of each month. This effort can have a great impact on our ecosystem.
Eramen Minerals leads the clean-up drive in barangay Biay Sta. Cruz, Zambales. This is one way how Eramen Minerals promotes ecosystem preservation as well as help the barangay to take the initiative in cleaning the sewage.
The citizens are very thankful because their farming was made more secure with more consistent access to water, while the barangay staff is hopeful that there will be more activities such as this in the future.
